Excellent post Blair! I am going through a similar process of auditing and positioning myself right now and will take these suggestions into my process.
I love the idea of using another of one's gifts to share the gift one might be reluctant to share. Turns self-promotion into pleasure and an offering to be made. Great post. One to book mark for sure.
Oh boy do I need this! My novel will launch in early ‘27 and just thinking about promotion makes my stomach ache. Thank you for this oh so helpful writing. I, too, will return to it often.
Great piece. Everyone these days seems to need to self-promote, even just looking for a regular day job. It's the spirit of the age. And it's so hard!! I love the idea of swapping shame for purpose.
As an ADHD coach, I do something similar with my clients who suffer from self-esteem issues. It was taught to me as "Rainbow List" but I've never liked that term. I think I'll start calling it a gift audit! And I love the idea of asking others what they think your gifts are...it's so often surprising to us how others see us.
I absolutely love the philosophy of thinking of self-promotion as sharing your gifts. Once you make your work public, it belongs to readers so thinking of promotion as gifting is lovely.
I've had this post open in a browser tab for a few days now, because I knew I'd need it for just the right moment later. "Gifts" are where it's at! You've articulated something I've tried to instill in my client "offers, although I haven't had such a clear word or concept for it. Thank you!

Oh good. Yes! Pleasure and offering. And in the spirit....feel free to share if you know others who would benefit. xo
This is spot on! I need to bookmark it and return to it often.
👏🙏 Thanks, Cindy. I hope you do.
This is so helpful as I think about my own book promotion. Thanks so much for sharing this!
Sisters in crime! So glad it was useful, Heather.

It is so hard! I hope the rethink brings a bit of ease. And I'm excited for you to do use gift audit with your lucky clients. Thanks for chiming in.
Self-promotion is SO DIFFICULT. This offered a different and more agreeable attitude and approach. Thank you.
It IS. Let me know how this works out! xo
I love the idea of doing a gift audit before offering my gifts. And look forward to reading your memoir!

So glad it resonated, Julie.
I appreciate the homework. Doing it now.
Report back! 😘
Super helpful. Connected my gift audit to ideas I am exploring and to needs in the world I could meet and sought/found the intersection.
Aw, perfect! Thanks for letting me know. :)
Thank you. With my novel newly out, I have to make friends with promotion. Could really relate to this.
I’m delighted.
